Volunteers are invaluable to the mission of Midwest Food Bank. Volunteers at the Bloomington facility are divided into two categories, individual & group.
Individuals or groups of 5 or less can volunteer during our Distribution Week each month. Volunteers for Distribution Week work from 8:15 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and 8:15 a.m. until about noon on Friday. It is not necessary to volunteer every day or even for an entire day. Come and join us when you are available. For individuals there are no reservations necessary, just show up. Groups should contact MFB to make a reservation. If you plan to arrive after 9:00, please call as we sometimes have sufficient volunteers to complete the work for that day. We generally are in need of extra volunteers Monday thru Thursday of Distribution Week after noon to stay until cleanup is finished.
During Distribution Week agencies come to Midwest Food Bank to pick up products for their food pantry or soup kitchen. We distribute to 230+ agencies during the week. The process involves the agency selecting the products, the cases of product are moved from pallet to cart and then loaded from the cart into the agency vehicle. While cases may weigh up to 35lbs, we also need volunteers to push carts or to record what products the agency takes. Distribution week volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
Because volunteers are working in a warehouse environment no open toed shoes are allowed, i.e. no sandals or flip-flops. Tennis shoes are fine.
Please see our Distribution calendar for the next week we will be having distribution.
Volunteer groups are scheduled during the non-Distribution Weeks. Groups of 15-25 volunteers can call and schedule for a work session doing repackaging of food products. They work for 2 hours and can start as early as 9:00 am and as late as 7:00 pm. You can sign up for Monday – Saturday. Only 1 group works on a given day, so you can choose your start time. Small groups may be partnered with another small group that has already been schdeuled.
Group volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Because it is a warehouse environment no open toe shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops, are allowed.
We're always in need of volunteers; without you we would be unable to meet the needs of those served by this ministry.
